Understanding Gum Disease

By Dr Farideh Farshad – GDC:76723

Gum disease is one of the most common conditions we see in general dentistry, yet many patients are unaware they have it until symptoms begin progressing. In the earlier stages, signs can include bleeding while brushing, bad breath, swollen gums or gum recession, although some patients experience very little discomfort at all.

One of the biggest misconceptions around gum disease is that it only affects older patients or those with poor oral hygiene. In reality, it can develop gradually over time and is often linked to plaque build-up, inconsistent cleaning habits and missed dental visits.

When left untreated, gum disease can begin affecting the bone and tissues supporting the teeth, which may eventually impact long-term oral health and stability. This is why regular dental examinations and hygiene appointments are so important, even when everything feels normal.

The earlier gum disease is identified, the easier it is to manage and stabilise. In many cases, small improvements in oral hygiene and professional dental care can make a significant difference to gum health over time.
